In southern Indiana, known for its German roots and restaurants serving traditional favorites, Maidens Brewery & Pub offers a variety of well-crafted beers along with indulgent twists on classic pub burgers and sandwiches.

Beers vary from traditional German Kellerbier and Hefeweizen to brown ales, IPAs and goses. If beer’s your focus, you can accompany it with such snacks as nachos, fried cheese curds, pretzel bites, or fried pickles.

If you’ve got an appetite for more substantial food, check out the sandwiches. On the lighter side is a fish sandwich: delicate pollock, coated by hand in thick batter, is fried until it has a crunchy pillow of breading around the flaky fish. It comes topped with lettuce, tomato, and onion, with tartar sauce on the side. Its bun is as much of an attraction as what’s inside: rich and buttery with a soft bite that holds up to the filling.

For something light but not completely void of extras, the portobello mushroom Burger is a good choice. The mushroom is topped with sweet caramelized onions and warm, melted provolone. Chimichurri adds a hit of unexpected flavor. Like all burgers and the fish sandwich, it comes on that same delicious bun.

If you are ready to go all in, choose the purgatory burger. It’s loaded with creamy melted provolone, fried onion straws, and sautéed mushrooms plus a zesty schmear of horseradish cream. Equally impressive is Rio Grande Chicken topped with pepper jack, chorizo and creole ranch sauce that drape over the sides like a hearty, cheesy chili. The chicken can be ordered crispy (fried), grilled, or blackened.

Expect a light crowd if you go early in the week between lunch and dinner hours, but even if you hit it at a busy time, there is plenty of upstairs and downstairs seating. When the weather cooperates there are two levels of uncovered outdoor patio seating.
