L&B Spumoni Gardens

L&B Spumoni Gardens

Spumoni is the signature item at this Brooklyn institution (since 1939), but do not ignore the pizza. It is a fine pie with a chewy crust and just the right mix of tomato sauce and cheese on top.

L&B’s Spumoni Gardens is world famous (in Brooklyn). A fixture in this neighborhood since 1939, on a warm summer night you will find large crowds gathered around the pickup windows and eating areas, and young Brooklynites double-parked, showing off their cars.

What to eat at L&B Spumoni Gardens

Their pizza is always fresh, crisp, and good-tasting, and they have enough ovens that you never have to wait for a pizza to cook. The main thing to come to L&B’s for, though, is their spumoni. They make their own and even supply it to other eateries around the NYC area. Many a time while driving far from the Gardens I’ve seen a sign in a window saying “We have L&B spumoni.”

One word of note: there is also a full service restaurant available, but it is best to avoid it. The food there is bland and nothing special (although the pizza is first rate).

As more and more of the city seems to fade away and disappear and get taken over by twee with each passing day, L&B Spumoni Garden remains in good old south Brooklyn. Enjoy it while you still can. Along with Luigi’s on 5th Avenue, Brooklyn and a few others around town, L&B offers a prime sample of the Granma pie, crust similar to Sicilian, but with cheese laid directly on top of it, then generous sauce on top of that, with a little parm, maybe some basil on top of that. L&B’s crust is thicker and breadier than most, and the generous sauce is rich and not too sweet or salty. Catch it by the slice, or by the “half sheet”–but either way, if you catch it coming right out of the oven on a busy Saturday night, it’s perfection.

The spumoni–Italian cream ice–a mix of pistachio flavor, chocolate, and cremolata, with nuts mixed in, is the best in the city. Where else are ya gonna get this stuff, eh?

I’ve eaten at L & B’s many times. It’s amongst my favorite places to get pizza in all of Brooklyn. I usually get the square pie, with thick dough, melted cheese and delicious tomato sauce on top. On occasion I’ve eaten a slice or two that wasn’t the freshest but more often than not it’s busy with people and the pizza is fresh out of the oven. But it’s never the plastic-looking “sitting around all day” pizza that you find in many pizzerias. I give it a 9 out of 10!
