Paleta esquimal at La Michoacana De Paquime

Paletas are Mexican popsicles made with chunks of fresh fruit, and paleterías are beginning to sprout up all over the country. While boutique-type stores prominently placed in fancy strip malls may be more commonplace, it is the more authentic locations that we favor.

In a formerly crime-ridden stretch of Zuni Road SE in Albuquerque is La Michoacana De Paquime, a squat cinder-block building with a brightly painted fruit mural out front. Inside, it’s a multi-item snack shop with paletas, nachos, ice cream and candy. There are so many attractive choices to choose from that you could go back here many times and still not get through all of the flavors.

What should I eat at La Michoacana De Paquime?

The paletas are thick, weighty and bursting with the flavors of fresh watermelon, cantaloupe, mango and strawberry, among dozens of other fruits. Their convex sticks are much more substantial and easier to hold than their flat American cousins.

Do not miss the Paletas esquimales

As fabulously delicious as the paletas are, the esquimales (Spanish for “Eskimo”) must be the focus for first-time visitors. Various flavors of ice milk are dipped in a very thin chocolate coating then rolled in chopped pecans, much like Eskimo Pies. Every bite is an absolute joy for lovers of ice cream novelties.

You can also get nachos!

On our visit, we noticed that some patrons were also enjoying nachos covered in gooey cheese and sliced jalapeños. Though they resembled the kind you’d get in a convenience store, we immediately regretted not ordering some! Without a doubt, La Michoacana De Paquime is a truly unique dessert shop and an unquestionable must-stop in the Duke City.
