Jomax Bar-B-Q

Review by: Michael Stern

Pork is king at Jomax Bar-B-Q in the small town of Metter, GA. Besides plates of ribs and pork sandwiches, you will also find good Southern vegetables like collard greens and fried okra.

There is nothing much along that long stretch of road from Savannah to Macon, but there is Jomax Bar-B-Q…

Pretty darn decent Bar-BQ. Damn good ribs, fairly good stew, good flavorful (chopped) pork butt, interesting slaw, good mac and cheese, regular country cooked cabbage, quick but tasty fried okra, flavorful cooked turnip greens and a couple of pleasant new owners. Ray and Cindy Huff are the new owners (about 14 months now), and have brought the place up to a new standard. Ray has been cooking and barbecuing all of his life and Jomax will allow him to fulfill a lifelong dream.

The beautiful old Southern Pride smoker was doing it’s thang with ribs and butts and what looked like some smoky chickens when we were there. They make all of their own dressings and sauces and except for a few things try to keep the local farmer in mind when they provision for their restaurant. They have some good looking (we didn’t eat dessert at noon) desserts. It’s a really clean and inviting place. If you are ever driving to the coast, give ’em a try, you will be pleased.

There’s not a lot of scenery on I-16 between Macon and Savannah. So a stop at Jomax’s is a welcome break while driving along this route through Georgia’s Coastal Plain. Jomax’s sits just north of the small lake where the Metter Welcome Center is located. Although Jomax’s can be seen while driving by, it is slightly back from the road and behind a gas station/convenience store.

The chopped barbecue pork is quite tender and moist. The tangy barbecue sauce is a mixture that includes tomatoes, vinegar, a little mustard, and some spices. The sauce is available in bottles for purchase to take with you.

Side dishes include a hearty Brunswick stew with corn and lots of diced potatoes, good creamy cole slaw, and potato salad with a strong mustard flavor. Sliced white bread accompanies a barbecue plate. However, toast is available for an extra charge.

Homemade desserts are available. Banana pudding is usually one of the choices. It is sweet and good, as it is made with really ripe bananas.

There is plenty of seating inside Jomax’s, but if you would like to eat outside, just get your order to go and drive to the picnic tables at the Metter Welcome Center on the nearby lake.

After a meal at Jomax’s, most barbecue lovers would be pleased to come back again for another plate of this tasty pork.

Note: Closed on Sunday

Note: Interstate I-16, Exit 104. About a quarter-mile north from the Interstate, on the left
