Iron Horse Grill boasts that it serves the coldest beer for 200 miles. Its Martinis, poured tableside from the silver beakers in which they’ve been mixed, earn legendary status. Tipplers will feel right at home. For bar food and potent drinks, this place can’t be beat.

Hearty Eats at Island Horse Grill

Even a teetotaler will enjoy coming to the Iron Horse for a meal … providing that teetotaler likes bar food. Which raises the question: What exactly is bar food? Generally, it is food that goes well with drinks. Specifically in this restaurant it means extraordinarily well-dressed half-pound hamburgers. You can fork into a plate of thick, warm Yukon Gold potato chips loaded with cheese and bacon and jalapenos (nacho style). Savor fried-fish baskets, heroic sandwiches, and wings by the pound. One section of the menu, titled “Messes,” describes the Iron Horse Grill Mess as roast beef or grilled chicken with onions, peppers, and mushrooms topped with melted provolone cheese.

Cool Destination

An out-of-the-way location adds much to the appeal  of the restaurant (er, club). At a crossroads not too far from Roadfood favorites, Freeman’s BBQ and Crossroads Cafe, you will find it in the unincorporated community of Beech Island. (Godfather of Soul, James Brown once lived here; it is now his final resting place.) It has an extremely relaxed personality, with plenty of seats outside for pilgrims who come by car, pickup truck, and motorcycle to linger before or after a meal. The the interior decor is, to put it mildly, eclectic. A virtual forest of decor hangs from the ceiling. A year-around Christmas tree gleams with ornaments. All in all, Iron Horse Grill is a fun place with best-in-class bar food and potent drinks. I am proud to be a member.
