Hoagies

Rack your surfboard and take a few steps off the beach to grab a bite at Hoagies in Pismo Beach on the California coast. Serving cheap breakfast scrambles, burritos, smoothies, and more, this locally run shop was just what we needed for a breakfast feast.

Burly, bearded, tattooed men were running the show. We could see them working hard since the kitchen area was open and surrounded by plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. We ordered at the takeout counter, took our number and had a seat as we watched the chefs go to work.

While we waited for our breakfast burritos and egg scramble, smoothies arrived, ice cold. The Jamaican Sun and Cali Girl were both blended with berries, orange juice, and mango; and the Cali Girl offered a twist by including avocado as well. Thick and delicious, both would be a good choice if you’re in the mood for a smaller breakfast.

The burritos and scramble, each under $10, were heaping portions and loaded with eggs, cheese, and more delicious ingredients. Bacon, ham and tator tots wrapped in the tortilla of the PBL made for a filling and wonderfully meaty breakfast. The Big Mex also was stuffed with potatoes and the meat of choice was chorizo, which paired fantastically with the salsa on the side and tasted like a traditional Mexican breakfast. Peppers, onions and olives made up the veggie scramble, all topping a pile of tator tots and mounds of cheese. Ripe avocado and diced tomatoes also were wrapped up in the corn tortillas that came with this, making it a breakfast that left us stuffed and satisfied.

Filling meals, surf culture, and beach town vibes make this downtown establishment a best choice for Mexican style breakfast foods, morning cocktails, and sunny day smoothies.
