Hen & Heifer
Review by: Jane Stern
The Connecticut shoreline is one of the prettiest places in the country, perfect except for one thing. There are few good bakeries.
Hen & Heifer nicely fills the gap. The chef and owner is Whang Suh (half Korean and half Italian) and he has been trained as a pastry chef at that temple of culinary finesse Per Se in New York City. He also graduated from the French Culinary Institute, but the small sugary pieces of perfection run the gamut from small sophisticated gems, to rugged slices of sorghum pound cake. We especially like the chocolate shortbread cookies in the shape of cows, and the banoffee pie (a heavenly combination of toffee and banana). Hen & Heifer is a tiny place tucked away in the historic district of Guilford.
