Open at 6:00am every day of the week, The Griddle is the most popular place in Winnemucca for breakfast. Start with a glass of fresh squeezed orange juice and scan through one of the largest morning meal menus you will ever see. Highly recommended is the chorizo Benedict, where fat sausage links are cut in half and grilled face down to give them a nice crusty exterior. The chorizo is placed on a toasted English muffin, topped with a perfectly poached egg, and covered in a spicy chipotle hollandaise sauce.
The Griddle offers both a Belgian waffle and what they call a “traditional” thin one, which is a buttermilk beauty. It comes with a cup of hot syrup, but we thought it was even better with the homemade marmalade found on each table. Other items we enjoyed over multiple visits were steel cut oatmeal, Sunday-only blueberry hotcakes, and an excellent, extra-thick chicken fried steak that is hand-breaded to order.
The building alone makes it a compelling destination. The Griddle’s interior radiates Roadfood diner charm with its low wood ceiling, pea green swivel seats at the counter, and high-backed, plush booths. Service is small-town friendly; and don’t be surprised if the waitress calls you sweetie or darling.
The Griddle first opened in Winnemucca in 1948. It has since branched out to four locations around the Boise metro area.
