Fish 101

Review by: Emily Madsen

A locally loved seafood mecca, Fish 101 is a must stop when in San Diego, California. Casual enough for a meal after a long day on the beach or while you’re making your way there, the counter-order restaurant has a back patio, front patio, and indoor seating; a charming staff completes the picture.

The seafood menu is immense. To start with a bang, we recommend either tuna poke or grilled shrimp cocktail. We were stunned by both, each exquisitely prepared. Tuna poke is soft, melt-in-your-mouth perfection, covered in the most delicious Asian sauce. It is served with crisp wonton chips that are an ideal carrying vessel. The grilled shrimp are beautiful: not overcooked, seasoned with perfect smoky flavor and drizzled with fresh lemon. A splendid beginning for a seafood feast.

Meals at Fish 101 are fresh and exciting based on what fish is caught that day. All seafood served is fresh and most of it is local, making it the best eating option on the beach. When we visited, the main-course choice included mahi mahi, yellowfin tuna, and halibut — cooked and seasoned just right. They come with a choice of two sides from a long list of options that include seaweed salad, roasted Brussels sprouts, coleslaw, fries, and more.

An ever-changing specials board, copious fish choices, and genuine Cali ambiance made Fish 101 one of the favorite stops on our cross country trip. This San Diego hot spot is something you can’t find anywhere else!
