Doogie’s
Review by: Michael Stern
Doogie’s two foot hot dog has returned! Gone a while when supplier Grote & Wiegel went under, it is now back, better than ever. It is an astounding dog just to look at, resembling a hero sandwich fit for four, especially if it is loaded with sauerkraut, chili, onions, bacon, cheese, etc. Nestled in a fine bun made by Chavez bakery, it is a hot dog lover’s image of paradise.
If only for its size, Doogie’s hot dog would be worth noting in the annals of amazing Roadfood; but the fact is this extra-long sausage is really delicious. Firm-fleshed and with a chewy skin that gets slightly charred on the grill, it has a well-balanced spicy flavor that holds up well not only under any and all extra-cost toppings, but does well when spread with Doogie’s superb homemade hot relish or just ordinary mustard. For those of meek appetites, it is available in mere 16-inch and 12-inch configurations, too.
Beyond hot dogs, Doogie’s sells all sorts of other sandwiches, including a wide variety of terrific Philly cheese steak variations, a real hot lobster roll, and excellent hamburgers. The top of the line hamburger is called the Boomer. It comes topped with house dressing, lettuce, tomato, bacon, cheese, grilled onions, peppers, mushrooms, and onion rings. If that’s not enough, you can have a double boomer.
The fries menu is itself a delight; fries, cheese fries, chili cheese fries, curly fries, onion rings, and sweet potato fries.
(Special thanks to Johanna Greenfield for originally directing us to Doogie’s.)

The hot dogs are only so-so, lackluster, and somewhat greasy. The chili tastes like it’s out of a can, as does the cheese sauce. The curly fries are decent. My overall opinion is that they don’t make a majority of their offerings; they are either frozen and then fried, or just popped out of a can in the back. If you want a mediocre experience then head to Doogie’s, where their only claim to fame is a two-foot hot dog.

We ordered the two foot dog and a lobster roll to split. The lobster roll was buttery and quite tasty but not overflowing with lobster. Still, definitely worth ordering. My dining partner is not as adventurous as I am, so we ordered our hot dog plain and added our own condiments. I would have ordered the works – chili, cheese, sauerkraut, etc. But I ate my portion (two good size hunks) with mustard, onions, and Doogie’s special hot relish. Awesome! We did observe a rather large young man consume two of the 2 footers with chili. I could tell he was a seasoned vet. Check this place out. You’ll enjoy yourself.
