Dog House Sandwich Shop
Review by: Michael Stern
What to eat at The Dog House Sandwich Shop
Hot dogs are split and grilled to perfection and cheese steak sandwiches are piled high with juicy shaved beef, sweet onions, and goopy cheese. Even the turkey sandwich is made from a real, fresh-roasted turkey. No doubt about it: These are sandwiches worthy of the Culinary Big League of the Delaware Valley, a league in which sandwich making is a fine art.
The Dog House | What to expect
The Dog House is a boisterous joint with no table seating whatsoever, just a long counter that provides an excellent view of sandwich makers at work. If you come for a to-go order, as many customers do, you must be prepared to push your way through a crowded vestibule where placing and picking up orders is an adventure unto itself. Make your way to the counter and tell the lady what you want – a foot-long with chili and cheese, a cheese steak with light onions, extra tomatoes, and extra cheese – then step back and wait … and remember exactly what you ordered. When your food is ready, someone from behind the counter will call it out, not by name or number, but by exactly what it is. Claim it, pay for it, and be out the door in a flash.
Needless to say, this is not the restaurant you want to know about for a romantic date, or for a calm meal, or even for a normal-level conversation. It is loud, a little loony and lots of fun.
Note: A separate area adjoining the Dog House sells only pizzas and sub sandwiches. It has its own number for call-ahead orders: 302-328-1838.
