Crystal Restaurant

Like grandma’s cooking

At The Crystal Restaurant, we were first put off by the fancy lettering in the window offering “Steaks and Chops.” We assumed it would be an expensive steakhouse for the locals. Fortunately, we peeked inside and looked at the menu. If you want to know what it was like when your grandma had lunch while shopping back in the 50s, it’s the perfect, authentic experience. We loved it, and so did a number of people who were seated around us enjoying lunch.  It was a fantastic trip back in time, right down to the ham steak with boiled potato and gravy.

What should I eat at The Crystal Restaurant?

We ordered the club sandwich and salad, which we thought was very good. We also enjoyed ham steak, but what we enjoyed best was that we ate at “Watertown’s Oldest Restaurant.” And  the boiled potato? We assumed we would get the little spring potatoes with dill, like they serve at IKEA. Nope, a big old peeled and boiled potato with chicken gravy. It was like grandma was cooking in the kitchen.

They also have a full bar in which they serve “all legal beverages.” *Original post by Blaine Peters*

We stopped by the Crystal Restaurant in downtown Watertown, New York for lunch while on vacation in the Thousand Islands. The restaurant is less than 10 minutes off I-81 at the Arsenal Street exit.

At first we were put off by the fancy lettering in the window offering “Steaks and Chops.” We assumed it would be an expensive steakhouse for the locals. Fortunately, I peeked inside and looked at the menu. If you want to know what it was like when your grandma had lunch while shopping back in the 50s, it’s the perfect, authentic experience. We loved it, and so did a number of grandparents who were seated around us enjoying lunch. And I don’t mean my opening as an insult. It was a fantastic trip back in time, right down to the ham steak with boiled potato and gravy I ordered for $4.95.

My partner ordered the club sandwich and salad, which he pronounced “very good.” I enjoyed my ham steak, but what I enjoyed best was that I was eating it in “Watertown’s Oldest Restaurant.” And “Boiled Potato”? I assumed I’d get the little spring potatoes with dill, like they serve at IKEA. Nope, a big old peeled and boiled potato with chicken gravy. It was like grandma was cooking in the kitchen.

They also have a full bar in which they serve “all legal beverages.”
