Clayton’s Coffee Shop

Review by: Miranda Cilfone & Kris Masilamani

There’s nothing better than a sunny day on the beautiful peninsula of Coronado, just outside of San Diego, California. In this quaint downtown area you’ll find shops, cafes, and diverse restaurants. We stopped by Clayton’s Coffee Shop for a bite from the take out window and a nice iced coffee in the sun. Inside, this place resembles more of a old-style diner, with a menu that offers everything from French toast to burgers; but the take out menu differs slightly: sandwiches, hot pressed paninis, salads, and a variety of espresso and coffee drinks.

The restaurant was bustling the afternoon we visite,d but the staff was quick with our take out order, speedily making our coffees so we had something to drink while waiting for the food. The cold brew is classic and good enough to drink without cream or sweetener: thick, smooth and a great refresher during the hot hours of the day. If you crave a sweeter drink, the holiday menu has such options as Peppermint Mocha and Gingerbread Latte; but all year long you can drink Mexican Mocha, a spiced delight. We tried it frozen with a twist of whipped cream on top and were impressed by the concoction of spicy and sweet flavors that defined each sip.

From the small selection of salads, we chose Classic Caesar with steak and Grilled Chicken and Spinach with a few baked goods to finish off. The Caesar salad is based on uneventful chopped romaine lettuce, but the steak on top adds a burst of flavor. Crusted with an unknown awesome seasoning and cooked medium-rare, this meat makes our taste buds soar. As good as the Caesar was, it did not outshine the Grilled Chicken Salad. This one has spinach as the base, diced tomatoes, feta, and optional avocado. It is simple and fresh and only needs a splash of dressing to keep you wanting more.

After our healthy leafy greens, the large Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Muffin and Gingerbread Biscotti definitely hit the spot. Both are homemade and the muffin comes with chocolate drizzled on top, giving you just a bit of sweetness in every bite. The biscotti is a wonderfully simple holiday treat, topped with a dash of sea salt and great dipped in any cup of coffee.

Clayton’s Coffee Shop on Coronado seems usually to be pretty packed. The food and atmosphere are a clear indication of why. Take a sunny day to walk the town and don’t miss out on smooth coffee drinks, tasty treats, and take out.
