Bruno’s European Restaurant

Review by: Allie Spangler

Brunos’ European Restaurant serves traditional Polish and German food, this small gem sits right off the I-5 freeway and Pacific Avenue in Tacoma. It is a little slice of Europe, where food is made using hearty family recipes that Polish chef and owner Bruno brought with him when he immigrated to the United States.

What to eat at Bruno’s European Restaurant

Bruno’s European Restaurant is famous for “Hangover Soup” made from scratch every morning. It may sound off putting, but it has an amazing flavor that you don’t need a hangover to enjoy. Ingredients include bacon, pork, onions, celery, mushrooms, diced kielbasa, a wonderful combination of European spices, tomatoes, leeks, heavy cream, and the most famous ingredient: dill pickles. Served with a large fluffy roll and butter, it is tangy and unique – unlike anything I’ve ever tasted.

We also tried the Jager Schnitzel, a tasty tenderized breaded pork loin cutlet slathered in creamy mushroom and onion sauce and served with spaetzle and cucumber salad. The Polish Platter was also a winner, including such specialties as a stuffed meat and rice cabbage roll, meat and potato pierogi (potato dumplings), kielbasa, and pureed potatoes with gravy.

Desserts are just as good as main courses

Bruno’s has a large selection of traditional desserts as well, including double chocolate cake, German chocolate cake with raspberry filling, honey cake, and sour cream cake. We tried the apple strudel with caramel vanilla sauce – the pastry is flaky and honeytone brown with gooey cinnamon apples and golden raisins; a wonderful ending to a delicious European dinner.
