Brown Bag

Review by: Tony Bad

In the never ending hunt for a good breakfast we came across the Brown Bag in Rockland Maine while searching through the Roadfood forums. In addition to the hearty endorsement there, we had heard that everything they serve, including the breads, and meats for sandwiches, are made or roasted in house.

There are two entrances, one for the bakery, and another for the restaurant, which is open for breakfast and lunch daily 6:30 – 4pm. I am not sure if the hours change seasonally, as we were there in summer. When entering the restaurant you step up to the counter, order, and when your order is ready, your name is called out and you can find a seat and eat. The menu is on a board hanging above the counter, but don’t miss the specials board off to the right. I only noticed it after careful deliberation, and then had to think over my choices all over again.

I enjoyed a bacon, tomato, and cream cheese omelet. The eggs were fluffy and light, and the bacon far better than most. My order came with a generous helping of roasted red potatoes, which were fantastic, and thick slices of wheat toast made in house, which was also a real treat. My companion’s had the 2 berry/4 grain pancakes, buttermilk pancakes with pork links, and a bagel with cream cheese. All were sampled by myself, and were great. The buttermilk pancakes were particularly tasty. Light and fluffy, with a great buttermilk flavor. We went back on two other occasions…on the second day I sampled the Spanish Omelet, which had a great salsa and the same great light, fluffy eggs. On day 3 I had a special which was two eggs and biscuits with sausage gravy. The gravy was seasoned differently than I am used to having when I travel to the southern US, but it was quite good.

The pies and cakes in the bakery, as well as the loaves of bread all looked fabulous, but we were off to do some walking, and didn’t want to be weighed down carrying things. I will, however, be returning to sample more of the baked goods and the lunches.

If in the area around breakfast or lunch, I would not hesitate to make a stop here and enjoy! As a side note, the Brown Bag is just around the corner from Wasses, a great spot for Hot Dogs…talk about tough choices!
