I learned to like Bobby’s Bar-B-Q in the best possible circumstances: at a catered, bonfire-lit picnic in Aiken, SC’s Hitchcock Woods, where Bobby Jr. stood at a table behind a whole hog he had cooked, doling out chunks, strips, nuggets, soft fatty bites and brittle skin to revelers under a canopy of trees and a starry sky above.

The experience of dining at Bobby’s Bar-B-Q buffet on Jefferson Davis Highway (Route 1) across from the Ford dealer isn’t nearly as romantic. But the food is every bit as righteous. It’s absolutely traditional Central Savannah River Area barbecue: pork (some chopped,  some pulled) sided by smoky hash on rice and about a dozen other companions such as mac ‘n’ cheese, candied yams, green beans, baked beans, a tub of crunchy fried fatback twigs and another tub of even crunchier patches of skin stripped off the cooked hog. As is the custom at many full-bore barbecue buffets in this region, the selection also includes fried chicken and baked chicken — both of them outstanding.

There’s banana pudding for dessert, and it’s OK, but I’d rather apply appetite to savory goodies in the buffet line. It can be a big, satisfying meal — and at under $10 for what is, in essence, artisan cuisine, a tremendous bargain.

Dishes to try
Bobby’s Bar-B-Q, Fried Chicken
Fried Chicken
Must-Try
Yes, Bobby's is a barbecue, but I'd never kick this rich-skinned fried chicken leg off my plate.
Bobby’s Bar-B-Q, Chopped Pork
Chopped Pork
Must-Try
It is not possible to put some of everything on a plate in a single pass along the buffet. From the top, this one holds potato salad, two kinds of pickle, a hushpuppy, hash on rice, mac 'n' cheese, a candied yam, chopped pork, fried chicken, baked chicken, pig skin, and fried fatback.
Bobby’s Bar-B-Q, Fried Fatback
Fried Fatback
French fries seem like such weaklings compared to these hoops of dense, crunchy, fried fatback.
Bobby’s Bar-B-Q, Hash on Rice
Hash on Rice
Bobby's hash is slightly sweet and delectably smoky -- so right on rice.
Bobby’s Bar-B-Q, Skin
Skin
Help yourself to patches of crunchy, fatty, deliriously delicious BBQ pig skin.
