Birdsall’s Ice Cream
Review by: Roadfood Team
Go ahead and have the ice cream at Birdsall’s Ice Cream!
One of the best things about being an adult is you can have ice cream for lunch if you like. It was in that frame of mind that I stopped into Birdsall’s in Mason City, Iowa, lured by the promise of the sign outside which read “Fresh peach ice cream is here!”
When I sat down at the vintage boomerang Formica-topped counter, I was overjoyed to find out that Birdsall’s has been making their own ice cream in the back of the store since 1931.
What to eat at Birdsall’s Ice Cream
No fancy brand name mix-ins, no marble slabs for massaging, no high priced glass fronted cases – just ice cream in it’s purest form. There are, of course, shakes, malts, floats, cones, sundaes, etc. – but they stick to what they do best.
I elected to get the peach ice cream sundae which consisted of a pastel orange mound of ice cream (excellent texture and tremendous flavor) adorned with heaping spoonfuls of chipped up fresh peaches. Food of the gods! Ambrosia from Iowa! Manna from heaven on North Federal Street!
If you love ice cream, this is rare real deal. Get thee to Birdsall’s Ice Cream!
