Finally my trip report for my recent road trip from MA to GA and back.
Thanks again to Ayersian (Chris) for great suggestions and route assistance!
I’m skipping over a lot that is not food-oriented, as my trip was to visit friends, attend a wedding and catch some scenery – roadfood stops were occasionally detours but not the sole focus of the journey. [:)] I will happily answer any questions about missing pieces/pics (I did n’t manage to remember my camera for every meal, or was self-conscious on some occasions!).
I took a circuitous yet scenic route from Boston via Groton & the Berkshires but visiting friends so no RF stops. Then same on my next two legs to Philly & then thru DE & MD to VA Beach for visits with friends. It was an often scenic drive but no RF stops. Finally after leaving VA Beach I cut across VA on Rt 58 to I-85 to head thru Charlotte toward Atlanta, my wedding destination.
Mid-state Virginia, old RF location long shut down (kidding, but they have an old Dr Pepper sign!)
First RF stop was going to be BBQ in Charlotte NC per Ayersian’s suggestion, but Spoon’s was only open for lunch! Oops. Missed that part, so I called my brother who kindly went online to this here wonderful site and steered me to the Pengiun Drive-In. Here it is at night:
Wild crowd, I felt I was the only non-tattooed person in there. And I forgot they can smoke still in restaurants. Ick. I went for a corn dog & tried the sweet potato fries and fried dill pickles, but ate the dog before I remembered to take a pic:
From Charlotte I headed down near Spartanburg SC where I was happy to find the Beacon serves breakfast!!! Yahoo!!!! What a GREAT place. Pics of the order area, me with the 44 & 51 yr staff veterans, and my yummy biscuits & gravy w/ bacon. The sweet tea was out of this world!! (And I am not usually a sweet tea fan!) The huge blvd it is on I saw was named for the Beacon’s founder!
The Beacon: Outside, above, inside below.
(note to buffetbuster: that’s my shirt from the UNC bookstore!)
This was on the door at the Beacon, don’t have any idea why I had never seen one before! (The managers/owners showed me.)
From there I headed straight to Atlanta… All guests got welcome baskets of coke, wine, peanuts, chocolates & some local cracker thing. Mmmmmmm. That night (Friday) was the rehearsal dinner at Fox’s Theater, catered by The Varsity (and others) followed by huge celebration on Saturday. I couldn’t resist eating more Varsity food – I had to visit the original! So my Friday dinner of chili dogs was followed by a Saturday lunch of burger & fries.
Love how the kids all got paper hats…
Later, I photo’d the cake for y’all.
PHEW. First week posted and it was the second that was more RF and more stuff! Will post that later tonight. (S,29,337863,0,45454,66.30.46.217
