I saw a lot of the foreign ones in college The Bicycle Thief, Breathless, Blow Up, Rashomon, the Bergman stuff. As a matter of fact, I saw lots of these in college, either in film classes (I minored in film studies), or on film nights at the Student Union.
I remember my grandmother taking all 6 of us kids, plus my parents, to see Lawrence of Arabia, in the theater, in freakin’ Super Panavision 70, in 1962. There was an intermission, and you could get programs back then, big things with thick glossy pages, like a new car brochure. Even at 8 years old, I knew I was watching something amazing. I remember the one scene, with them walking back over the desert, and the vision of the sand filled my eyes from end to end. David freakin’ Lean.
I saw Apocalypse Now at The Stanley in Pittsburgh. I saw The Exorcist at The Woodlands Drive-In, in Jefferson PA. I probably saw some of the others there, too. I did see quite a few on HBO.
