Jim Viveiros, who along with his brother Jim (the chef) owned Ferry Tavern, was a good friend of my father, and also one of his best customers. My father was in the meat business and Ferry Tavern, along with Castlebrook, the Castle, Bill Hahn’s, Eddie Rahm’s and many other places along the Connecticut shore were customers. I used to deliver meat to those places when I was a kid, and one summer I worked at Castlebrook as a dishwasher, bus boy and driver. Saybrook Yacht yard was right next to Ferry Tavern in the ’50s. I remember they used to build Ravens. I had a Lightning then and lusted after one of those Ravens.  As a matter of fact I was delivering to the Castle for the first time and got hopelessly lost. I stopped at a house in Fenwick to ask directions and ended up having iced tea with the owner — someone named Katharine Hepburn.
