The Diner’s stickies and the Creamery’s ice cream aren’t what they’re cracked up to be. I’d skip the Creamery — it’s not horrible but it can taste like chemicals and there’s not a lot of flavor considering the fat content (it can’t be sold commercially outside of campus because of the fat content) and it can give you the same sensation you’d get from licking Crisco if you kept it in the refrigerator long enough to chill. Go to Meyer’s Dairy instead for some local country ice cream. Then skip downtown State College altogether (warm up any stale honey bun from a gas station in a microwave and it will be just as good as the over-glorified stickies) and head either to Duffy’s Tavern in Boalsburg (home of the first Memorial Day) or Hublersburg Inn, like I explained in my previous post above, in Howard. Both have great food, they’re family owned and have historic significance. The recently renovated Gamble Mill Tavern in Bellefonte is also a decent choice. And if you really want to see some of the local color of the State College area, try breakfast at the Sunset West Diner on 26/East College Avenue.
Anyone who knocks the Creamery Ice Cream has absolutely no food credibility in my book. Hundreds of thousands of satisfied Ice Cream eaters can’t be wrong!
