I visited some new places recently and wanted to share the experience.
Tupelo – "Two Tone Cafe" on Green St. just south of Main (Downtown). The Two Tone Cafe is not a typical southern "cafe", they serve salads, paninis, pastas, and coffees. But, it is very well done and the renovated old house is a neat experience as well. They are also famous for their tasty desserts as they are all served in small cups. Cheesecakes, brownies, and cakes are all prepared in the cups and you are provided an equally small spoon to enjoy them. What’s in the name Two Tone? It’s owned by two women, one black and one white. "Star", who is usually in the front, loves to give hugs.
Pontotoc – "Boondocks" in downtown Pontotoc. A nice Cajun place in NE Miss. Okay, I didn’t actually eat here but family and friends in Oxford and Tupelo were talking about it very favorably. While Boondocks opened before Katrina hit the coast, several of the staff are Katrina refugees according to an article in the paper. Be warned that Pontotoc County is dry.
Oxford – "Creek Cafe" on jackson Ave near Wal-Mart. This is a typical "meat and three" southern cafe and a very good one at that. Fried catfish, fried green tomatoes, black-eyed peas, and cornbread make for some good eating. I also had the coconut cream pie for dessert and it was the real thing… no institutional food supply here… excellent.
I’d also like to put in a plug for "Tami’s BBQ" in Sikeston, MO. About a mile west of the more famous Lamberts, it’s the real thing. Lots of pickups in the parking lot and lots of farmers having a fine meal. Good BBQ plus breakfast served all day.
