Ya know, one of the things about Pit Beef that I like so much (besides that its delicious) is thats its a really local dish, as far as I know, not served anywhere else. I did find it once, just north of MD-PA border in McSherrystown, but that’s really still local.
A couple of weeks ago I had my first pit beef sandwich and, believe it or not, I didn’t have to leave the Chicago area to do so. It came from a nifty little roadside place called Burger n Que, located on Wolf Rd. ( US 6 ) in south suburban Orland Park IL. They feature a sizable number of burgers, sandwiches and barbecue items and one is what the menu board refers to as “Baltimore’s Famous Pit Beef Sandwich”. I’ve been hoping to get to Baltimore to try pit beef for some time now and when I learned from their website that B n Q offered one I knew that I had to go and try it. I asked to get it with rare meat, but for some reason they said they couldn’t do that so I had to settle for well done beef. No problem though as the sandwich was quite good, with a nice smoky flavor to the meat. Good fries too. The sandwich comes on a pretzel bun unless you request a regular one which is what I did as I’m not wild about the pretzel type. Burger n Que is known locally for big juicy charbroiled burgers, and I’m going to have to get back there soon to try one. I definitely recommend a stop here if you’re in the area.
