In Poughkeepsie you should try to make time (at least an hour) to stroll across the Hudson River on the old RR bridge – the” Hudson River Walkway”. This is a unique experience it is about a mile and a half across, so a return trip is about 3 miles, but there’s no reason why, if you want, you can walk out as far as you want and turn around – no fees, no bothersome rules, except no motorized vehicles. The walkway is also accessible from the Highland (west) side just a short detour off 9w. Parking can be a problem sometimes as they never anticipated the volume of walkers, so too little parking has been provided.
There are vendors of hot dogs and hamburgers and such on the Walkway approaches, and bikes can be rented on the Poughkeepsie side – also wheelchairs and adult tricycles.
In Highland, on the River is The Mariner’s On The Hudson restaurant with spectacular views of the bridges and up and down the river. The food is indifferent, at best, and the service is spotty, but we’ve frequently enjoyed a a bowl of “peel your own shrimp” and a beer on their deck on the river. You should call for hours this time of year – 845 – 691- 4711.
