58 is a prettier ride, but it is a bit more as far as the curving 2 laner  driving goes. We’ve done both. 58 would be my choice if I am not pooped out from the rest of the ride.
In Bakersfield, Olive Dr is 2 exits north of the 58W exit on the 99 if you do decide to visit Hodels. Not more than a mile or two.

My friends say that the wildflower (poppy fields) are particularly colorful this year. Keep an eye out in the western desert area. You can’t miss them if they are blooming.
