When  was a little kid in Hamden, Connecticut — third and fourth grade — we used to be let out of school to pick strawberries at Peters’ Farm off Dixwell Avenue. We’d get six cents a quart for our labor, and I never made more than 18-30 cents a day. But I was always full by the time I finished each day.

One thing I’ve learned since that time is that strawberries don’t taste anywhere near as good without dirt.
