Are you saying if Congress (and Congress alone) had the power to regulate the value of money they would not enable the profligacy of deficit spending?  I thought the main idea behind an independent Fed was so they would take a longer term view that just to the next election.  Another might be that the FED s economists might know more about economics that a Congress full of lawyer/politicians.
