Ok, just an update. You know how some days you just feel like knocking yourself over the head with a heavy brick? Well, that’s what the last few weeks have been like for me. I managed to negotiate a favorable winter lease (50% of my per diem rent I pay in-season) with the landlord, I announced to my customers with signs and flyers that I’d be here this winter, and everyone was happy and excited.
Then, two weeks ago (the week encompassing columbus day) I had my second-worst sales week of the entire season. Then, on the 16th, a local radio station was holding their annual “west county safety day”, which they hold every year right here in my parking lot! They have always in the past brought in a food vendor, so to prevent that I sunk some money into sponsoring the event. Knowing that the event usually draws over 1000 people (or so they claimed), I brought a helper in for the day and hired two nieces to wander around in hot dog costumes. I invested in a helium tank and balloons so the girls in the weiner suits could hand out ballons to kids.
The event was a bust. I bet we didn’t get 75 people. The day was actually a lot slower than a normal Saturday, probably because the regular customers stayed away assuming the place would be mobbed. Not only did I lose money, I didn’t even make enough to recoup the radio sponsorship, never mind everything else!
Then, last week was THE slowest week I’ve had (worse even than the week that the tropical storm came through and it downpoured four days straight). This week has been pretty poor, too. Now November 1st is coming up and I don’t have the money to pay the first rent payment for the winter. Unless tomorrow and Friday are absolutely gang-buster days, I’ll have to pull my trailer out of here this weekend.
A regular shitty end to what was otherwise a successful first season.
