The El Mariachi in the old Tumbleweed location in Florence is finally open. As with most Mexican restaurants, you start with the free chips and salsa. I couldn’t decide whether or not the chips were made in restaurant or not as they were thick like the ones you get at the supermarket but they were served slightly warm. The salsa was thin, almost like tomato sauce but had the occasional chunk of vegetable. It wasn’t really spicy, but had a pleasant kick at the end. A nice touch was that the salsa was served in a cruet and each person had their own bowl so you could double dip [8D]
I had the Tacos de Carne Asada. For $12 I got three tacos with the steak and grilled onions, pico de gallo and another salsa whose name escapes me, rice and refried beans. Overall it was a very good meal, with the only complaint being the steak wasn’t the ‘fall apart’ tender it needed to be in order to bite through and not pull out a full piece when taking a bite of the taco. The pico de gallo and the other salsa were both very good and chunky. While I’m by no means an expert on Mexican cuisine I was very happy and would gladly recommend them.
