not to be a pest, but, if one adds anything to a grilled cheese sandwich , doesn’t it cease to be a grilled cheese sandwich and become something else…like grilled cheese and bacon sandwich? I’m serious here, if you add a hanburger to a grilled cheese sandwich, you have a patty melt, not a grilled cheese with hamburger. Therefore, a grilled cheese with bacon, or ham isn’t any more a grilled cheese sandwich than a grilled cheese with sole.
Anyway, as you might ascertain, I like plain old grilled cheese sandwiches. Nothin’ fancy, just comforting. I don’t particularly care for grilled swiss or anything too sharp. If it’s too sharp, then I feel like it needs something to balance it. So, I go for a balance of cheese where the end result is creaminess. However, most of the time, I use American cheese – and in fact, it’s the only use I have for American cheese. I simply don’t buy American cheese unless I know I’ll make some grilled cheese sandwiches. Otherwise, I don’t care for it. I think I like it for grilled cheese because it brings back memories of my youth. So with that, the only thing I like to add to my grilled cheese sandwich is a side of tomato soup. [:p]
