It’s a mixed bag. The Revolution was led by WASPS, but the Tories who fled the country were all WASPS. The Abolition movement was led by WASPs , but so was the Confederacy. Prohibition was certainly a WASPish movement, as was Repeal. FDR was a WASP, but so were a whole lot of the people who hated him – and hate him to this day.
What I was referring to in my recent reply was something that used to be the exclusive domain of the WASPs, but is now largely dominated by individuals of a wide range of ethnicities: Black ultra right-wingers, Irish/Catholic TV bloviators (need I name them?), Jewish neo-cons, Cuban refugees, Latin evangelicals, and so on. These are people who have abandoned their heritage , expend their energies working against the people who most need help, and have become the current apotheosis of smug comfortable indifference to the welfare of those less fortunate than themselves.
WASPS are American, just like any other identifieable group in America – a mixed bag.
