Jmckee, here is an earlier post I put up on DC in a previous thread. Maybe of some help to you:
Although it is a chain (Dallas/FW & Atlanta areas as well as DC), if you want some excellent Mexican food check out The Rio Grande Cafe. It consistently scores highly in both the Washingtonian Magazine and the Washington Post ratings and surveys. There are various locations around in Md & Va including Bethesda, Fairfax, Reston and others. Their house made salsa is one of the best I’ve ever had and they have above average standards including fajitas and the usual other Tex-Mex stuff. They also have some things you won’t typically find like barbecued goat. Not for everybody but it must be somebody’s hot button. Fun atmosphere too and good border beer selection.
Speaking of beer, don’t miss the chance to visit The Brickskeller at 1523 22nd St, NW–just west of the Dupont Circle Metro stop. Wonderful basement beer emporium with a beer menu that will blow your mind. It’s a landmark in DC. Food okay, mostly barfood standards, but they do serve very good Buffalo burgers which are leaner than hamburger and are loaded w/ all the fixings plus steakhouse fries.
Hope you guys have a great trip…… [:p][:p]
