Through most of the 90’s I exhibited at an annual trade fair in Hannover, Germany. We stayed in the same small hotel in a residential neighborhood every year, and the local bierstube was owned & operated by Paulaner; they had the best dunkel I’ve had.
On their menu, they had "husaren-schnitzel", topped with crispy fried onions. It became my favorite, and I’ve never seen it here in German restaurants in the US.
Anyone ever come across it? The leberkase, with a fried egg on top, came a close second.
I always got a kick out of watching one little old lady, obviously a pensioner, sitting over a tiny plate of food while she power-smoked unfiltered cigarettes and tossed back liter after liter of beer. The manager would pour her into a taxi at the end of the night.
Good times.
