It’s been awhile, but I can recommend Ralph’s Bar-B-Q in Weldon, North Carolina wholehogically.
Farther south, Duke’s Bar-B-Q in Orangeburg, S. C. is highly touted hereabouts… I’ve never been there.
One major recommendation, though… slow down for Emporia, Virginia! An Athens police officer whom I’ve known for years was ticketed there for ONE MILE over the limit. The officer who wrote him said that it didn’t matter that he was a fellow police officer, and added "We never write warnings… only tickets" — Consider yourself forewarned.
