We cross the bridge just about every year with at least one yearly visit to Midland, Michigan. I prefer going the UP way between Midland and Minneapolis than looping around Chicago. Good choice going that way Rapunzll.
When we were in the Washington DC area I broke down and bought a GPS. Great investment. I got a Garmin Nuvi 200. It finds your current location by satellite and you pick your destination. It then routes you, shows you where you are on the screen and tells you how far until the next turn. It also talks to you and tells you when to turn. Its a hoot. We named her Dory the fish in Finding Nemo. One thing she did was get us across Wisconsin where there are so many route choices. She worked great. She also routed us on two shortcuts via county roads that we would have never deduced with the state maps. You can view your destination by 3D map or you can view a regular map with north oriented up and scroll through to see where you are being routed. It tells you how fast you are going, when you will arrive at your destination, average speed, stop time, elapsed time, miles to go, total miles and more.
Here’s Dory showing us approaching the Mackinac Bridge. [:D]
