I think you are referring to the Schwegmann Brothers Giant markets. I loved them. They even sold house brand beer brewed in New Orleans for them by the Dixie Brewing Company. They eventually faltered, and sold out to A&P, I think, around 1996 or 1997. Shortly thereafter, their house brand frozen foods showed up in Manhattan dollar stores. The Giant markets you remember are gone.
