We didn’t have snow here this week, but on Monday we had sustained 90+ mph winds, combined with a lot – I mean A LOT – of rain. Because of all the snowfall over the previous 4 weeks, many of the normal drainage routes were blocked, and some people had flooded houses. There were also some pretty serious mudslides which took out some apartments and warehouses. Though there were some injuries, we were very, very fortunate that no one was seriously hurt. I’ve lived here for about 15 years, and while high wind is common (the Aleutian islands are, after all, "The Birthplace of the Wind"), I’ve never seen it like it was Monday – it was actually a little frightening. It was awesome – not in the sense of "cool," but awe-inspiring.
It’s gusting 50+ now, but heck, that’s nothing!
