In addition to its hosting a record nine U.S. Open Championships, Oakmont has also hosted a number of other “majors”: U.S. Amateur and PGA Championships – 19 “majors” in all.
Over the years it has “identified” Bobby Jones, Gene Sarazen, Tommy Armour, Sam Snead, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus, Johnny Miller, Ernie Els, and now Dustin Johnson as being the best players in their fields. Save for Augusta National which hosts a major every year, no other course in the world has as stellar a list of winners.
Can you imagine Bobby Jones playing the 2016 greens with this putting stroke?
Even though the game has evolved from wooden shafts, persimmon, gutta percha and balata to CAD-designed and engineered exotic metals, Oakmont still defends itself as well or better than any other course in the world.
That is THE mark of its true greatness.
