When we lived in NM there was this (dumb?) tradition for kids to pinch each other if you didn’t wear grren on SPD. I rememeber soem kids got really scared of it. Anything for a bit o’ sadism….

This is not a tradition in NYC (as far as I know) but I googled it and found out it happens all over the USA, and was statred by children in the 1980’s. hmmmm…
