Our periwinkles are in bloom. There is a riot of birdcalls at dawn when I go out and get the newspaper. Heard a very loud woodpecker going at it this morning. The sound that most tells me summer is on the way is the call of the red winged blackbird. I’ve been hearing them for a little over a week. The males come back first to establish territories, and then the ladies follow. Soon the males will begin warbling and bowing to pay court. Ahhh spring!
