Our pantry had a leakage problem–literally, not just food items spilling out onto the counters, but the pipes behind the wallboard, so we had to rebuild it. Tore it out down to the studs, and rebuilt it Better! Stronger! and Faster!–ok, more shelving, anyway, and those baskets that pull out like drawers instead of shelves so deep stuff got lost at the back. To be on the safe side, we pitched out everything, and started over with very few staples–canned tomatoes, some pasta and polenta and tuna in oil, and cereal, and that’s about it. We buy our veggies fresh or frozen, and there are some excellent stores close to the house and on the way home from work, so if there’s something we need for a recipe, we just pick it up then and use it up. Now there’s room in the pantry for our recycling bins and reusable bags, and we don’t have to worry about potatoes moldering away, or bubbling cans of pudding. Now if we can just keep it like this…..
