For you ‘younger folks’, some of us will remember when it was considered a "charitable thing" to hear that the USO or other organization had donated gift cartons of cigarettes to patients in military hospitals in various locations around the world. The image meant to be visualized in those announcements was beautiful movie star brings a carton of Chesterfields (or Lucky Strikes or Camels) to the bedridden patient with a full body cast in a traction bed. The reality was an overweight hospital orderly came into the Rec-Room and tossed cartons to anyone awake enough to initial the receipt saying we wouldn’t sell them on the blackmarket. I do recall that I received a carton a week while I was hospitalized after visiting S E A . As a non-smoker they were a good item to swap for various other cultural needs.
I guess times have changed a bit.
