At a conference once many years ago (1970’s) our keynote speaker was an official from the N C Dept of Education. He smoked while he gave his ‘address’ to a roomful of educators. During a Q&A session after the speech he was asked about the smoking…He replied that "It is required of all State Employee’s to smoke when representing the people of the Great State of North Carolina"! he said it ‘tongue in cheek’, but I had the feeling there that the non-smoking campaign would have a tough fight in North Carolina.

Now that the last cigarette producer has shutdown their factory here in Louisville (and relocated to North Carolina BTW) there is less of a fight in the Legislature over the protection of the tobacco growers.
