I just wish I’d known about the specifics ahead of time, so if I can be of any help it is my pleasure.
Here’s the way it worked for my grandson. He called the week prior to his final week of Basic, just after he returned from Victory Forge, to get an OK from a family member to transport him to his AIT at For Lee. Then, on Family Day, I had to sign in with his platoon as his family member doing the transporting. They asked for my cell phone number, I had to agree not to give him booze or tobacco, and that’s all there was to it.
Congratulations on your son going into the Air Force. I visited Lackland once when I was stationed at Bergstrom AFB in Austin. I took my Basic Training at Sampson AFB in Geneva, New York. Back then, the Air Force had three Basic Training bases — Lackland, Sampson and Park AFB in California.San Antonio’s a tgerrific town (I’ve been there since), although most people in the Air Force likely don’t think so.
