I used to get a 12 pack long neck bottles of Stegmeier Beer for $2.99 at the Great American grocery store in Potsdam, NY.
NY has a 5 cent bottle deposit, but the 12 pack recyle deposit on Stegmeier was $1 instead of 60 cents, because 40 cents was for the heavy carton it came in.
Apparently, Stegmeier reuses the boxes and they don’t melt the glass down, they just wash the glasses.
It wasn’t uncommon to open a 12 pack and see broken glass in the bottom and label put on upside down.
But hey, it was 2.99 a 12 pack of bottles! And it was pretty good. A lot better than old millwater and milwaukie’s beast that was a staple on out college campus.
Also, used to drink Keystone light, Keystone, Ice, and Keystone Dry back then.
And I remember taking trips to Penn State just to get Yuengling (and visit people). Who knew they’d distribute out of state. It only took ’em about a hundred years to figure that out!
