I have been hoping and praying for someone to ask about recommendations in the Lansing area just so I could mention this place!
In Okemos, a suburb on the east side of Lansing, you will find The Traveler’s Club International Restaurant and Tuba Museum. It delivers exactly what the name promises. This is a funky little place, definitely oriented towards the hipper student crowd. Dad and I discovered it last year while on business in Lansing and enjoyed it very much.
The mostly vegetarian, and very creative menu represents an eclectic taste for world cuisine, mostly Caribbean and Asian (at least on the day we were there). Fear not, there are meat dishes too. But you will be amazed at how many different culinary creations can be made with black beans. Lots of fruit juices and, as I recall, a nice selection of micro-brews as well.
As for the Tuba Museum, every available inch of wall space is occupied by vintage tubas, baritones, Sousaphones and many other kinds of large brass instruments in a variety of shapes, sizes and vintages.
This is a homey, Earthy, low key place. If you’re looking for big excitement, stay away. If you’re looking for a place that will put a gentle smile on your face, both from the food and the atmosphere, The Traveler’s Club is your place.
