Thanks Buddy. I hadn’t heard an update in a long time, and I thought I had heard that they were planning on another south location.
Since Dave wanted to keep it inexpensive, I wouldn’t recommend the place north, but as far as I’m concerned, "100 miles ain’t too far to drive for good fried chicken". [:p]
Mark, there have been numerous rumors about the much awaited reopening of Stroud’s south. Most recently they were supposedly working out a deal to take over the building that currently houses Snead’s Bar-B-Que at 171st & Holmes. Apparently the deal fell through and they are still without a home.
As for the distance and the expense of Stroud’s north location, I don’t think either one is out of line. The interstate system in KC allows you to get almost anywhere quickly as long as you know where you’re going. I would say it is probably a 25 minute ride from Overland Park to Oak Ridge Road. Just pick up I-35 in O.P. and head north to the Oak Ridge Road exit; there’ll be signs pointing you to Stroud’s all the way.
The price ain’t too bad neither. We visited at Christmas and didn’t notice any great price differences from the old 85th Street spot. You can make it more economical by sharing a dinner with a slight upcharge for the extra salad or soup that also guarantees free refills on those magnificent real mashed potatoes, over cooked green beans laden with hunks of smoked pork, and their over the top, thick, country gravy. If I recall correctly, four of us ordered three dinners with one extra upcharge and we ate like fiends with plenty of leftovers to take home.
With drinks and tip the whole thing wasn’t much more than about $50. Not too shabby for four hungry people, eh?
The only reason I didn’t recommend Stroud’s to begin with was because DetectDave was very specific in citing Overland Park without ever mentioning the greater Kansas City area. I wanted to keep things simple and close to his base of operations. Now if DetectDave wants to open things up a little and include all of KC and its environs, we can have one heck of a thread going here in no time!
