heat is heat and the flavor that you get from the source is what makes the difference. There are different ways to skin a cat and I think that DaveM found it. your oven is the source of heat and in this case, it will substitute for wood or charcoal and the woodchips, sawdust or whatever will add the flavor that you desire. I am going to try his suggestion. For those who cannot use a grill for one reason or another, I think his suggestion was super.
