I often give a "strange" amount of money to get rid of pennies {or change in general}. A lot of the time, I am given back my change with more change. Some people just can’t comprehend.

I work at a hotel near the university I graduated from. Another employee {and good friend of mine} taught freshman English while working on her master’s degree, and in the banquet department of the hotel. I have seen some papers she has graded. It is amazing that some of the kids graduated high school. The lack of grammar skills is appalling.

When I went to said university, you had to take a freshman English exit exam in order to move on, to prove you could make a coherent point on paper. Knowledge of spelling, grammar and sentence structure had to be apparent. This is not a requirement anymore at said university. The teacher {professor/master’s degree student} decides if someone moves on. I am not sure if there are any other checks and balances to make sure someone can write.

I am not saying my friend is a bad teacher, because she is not, but who is making sure our COLLEGE students can read and write?
