It’s blasphemy in this part of the country, but I cannot in good conscience opt for The Varsity. There’s the original in Atlanta on North Avenue, the Varsity Junior on La Vista Road by Cheshire Bridge Road in N/E Atlanta, and the one here in Athens, but none of those strike my fancy.
Having never been there, it’s hard to say – but I’d have to choose either Charlie Joseph’s in La Grange or Nu-Way Weiners in Macon. (If you can stretch your criteria to include such specialties as scrambled dogs, I’d pick The Dinglewood Pharmacy in Columbus hands down.) And Skin Thrasher’s in Anderson, South Carolina deserves an honorable mention.
Keep this thread handy. When I’m able to hit the road, I’ll visit all three of these places and report back – here or on some other thread.
